Augmented Reality (AR)
Computer technology that provides content in context - at the exact time and place we need it. Augmented reality is created by augmenting, or “adding,” 3D models, images, or videos over real-world objects.
Augmented reality differs from virtual reality in that you're not fully immersed in a digital world. With virtual reality (VR), you would wear a headset and be immersed in a digital environment. You wouldn't need a mobile device to interact with the content.

Notice in the photo the VR user is wearing gloves that are mimicked on the TV screen. With the headset on, he's unable to see his physical environment and surroundings, which is different from AR where you are able to see your surroundings.

With AR, you use a smartphone, tablet, desktop, or headset to interact with digital elements because you're superimposing them onto a physical environment.
Experience a quick AR moment! Follow these steps to place a 3D model of an industrial pump in your environment:
-
Using your smartphone, scan the QR code or follow the link.
-
A "Finding Horizontal Surfaces" prompt will appear. Scan your phone in a well-lit area around the room.
-
Notice that a grid will appear where the pump will be placed. Tap the pump to place it in the room.
-
Now you can walk up to and around the pump, and if the creator had made the pump interactive, you could also interact with the 3D model of the pump.
